Your Brain Structure: Myelin & Mitochondria

As a leading producer of nootropic supplements, brain health and science guides everything we do. Our purpose is to provide the best nootropic supplements on the market.

“Our greatest human adventure is the evolution of consciousness. We are in this life to enlarge the soul, liberate the spirit, and light up the brain.” — Tony Robbins

Myelin

Myelin is a mixture of proteins and phospholipids that is formed into a whitish sheath around  nerve axons, similar to insulation around an electrical wire, by specialized glial cells in your nervous system. About 70% of myelin is composed of fat/lipids, 25% of which is cholesterol. A neuron  that is myelinated (i.e. sheathed in myelin) can transmit nerve impulses at dramatically higher  speeds. Whereas nerve impulses in an unmyelinated neuron will travel at 0.5-10 meters per second,  nerve impulses in a myelinated neuron can travel at speeds of up to 150 meters per second (335  miles per hour!).

The dramatic increase in neural speed caused by myelination results in increased  power and complexity in the brain and increased muscular coordination. When myelin increases  in thickness, the neurons are able to fire at a faster rate and thus you think and move faster. The  more often neuronal connections are used (through practice and learning), the more myelin insulation increases and becomes thicker and heavier and the faster the neurons used in that particular connection can fire.

Myelin decreases naturally as we age and is further reduced by poor diet (high sugar), poor sleep quality,  alcohol and drug use, and nutritional deficiencies. Cognitive decline and memory loss occur when the  myelin decays and neurotransmitters get disrupted as their pathways lose their lubrication. This is when  the brain starts to short-circuit due to the lack of optimal myelin and acetylcholine.

In order to maximize the myelination of your neurons: get plenty of high quality sleep, challenge  your brain by learning new complex skills (such as a musical instrument), eat healthy fats (DHA), boost your BDNF levels, supplement your diet with key nutrients, and exercise.

Key supplements: Zinc (Zinc Picolinate is best), CDP Choline (Citicoline), Vitamin B12, Pantothenic Acid (B5), Phosphatidylserine, Melatonin, Uridine 5’-Monophosphate, Ashwagandha, Lion’s Mane Mushroom, PQQ and DHA.

Whether you’re just starting to discover nootropics, or you’ve experienced other nootropic brands and are considering new options, we invite you to explore our daytime nootropic Awaken Gold and our nighttime nootropic Mind:Restore. We designed these to be the cleanest and most effective nootropics available.
