5-HTP, a naturally occurring amino acid, is the immediate precursor to the neurotransmitter Serotonin and has been shown to help people fall asleep faster. Serotonin is responsible for maintaining a positive mood and emotional balance. Serotonin also plays a key role in cognitive functions, including memory and learning and in the homeostasis of neural tissue.
Serotonin cannot cross the blood-brain barrier and therefore the brain must produce Serotonin utilizing 5-HTP and Vitamin B6.
